The material you see to the left is the blackest material ever made - a recent accomplishment of researchers at Rice University. Due to use of carbon nanotubes, the material can absorb 99.9% of all light hitting its surface, and has various potential applications in solar energy collection, infrared detection, or practically any science requiring certain light tolerances.
Nanotechnology is a growing and promising field of science involving the manipulation of matter on the molecular level. Pioneers in this field envision tiny structures and machines capable of a variety of fascinating mechanical and biological endeavors.
It therefore comes as a shock that a recent survey found that two-thirds of US citizens believe that nanotechnology is “morally unacceptable.” And these strange findings are not due to lack of understanding about the nature of the science.
[S]urvey respondents are well-informed of nanotechnology and its application, [yet] ‘they are still rejecting it based on religious beliefs,’ he said. ‘The issue isn’t about informing these people. They are informed,’ said Scheufele [, the conductor of the survey].
The religious/moral basis for rejection of nanotechnology is unfathomable. The potential to “play God” or accomplish other super-human feats is equivalent to rejecting the telephone for allowing long-distance calling or extension ladders for allowing us to climb unnatural heights.
Whatever this survey represents, a watchful eye must be kept. The next step would be implementing this bizarre morality through laws designed to meddle in the field of nanotechnology! Think of the amusement when politicians are asked whether they consider constructing tiny machines “immoral” instead of having to make a show of hands as to when life begins or whether they believe in evolution.
For the record, manipulating matter on the molecular level is not a moral hazard. See also: A Comprehensive List of Consumer Products Bearing Nanotechnology.
