Appalachian Is, Dare I Say, ‘Hot Hot Hot’
This past weekend, Appalachian State University defeated #5 Michigan in Ann Arbor by a score of 34-32 - perhaps the greatest upset in college football history. This is not a post about the game, which, by the way, ended with a fantastic field goal block and some classic audio from Appalachian State Sports radio. No, instead this post is about an advertising video from ASU circa 1985 (one would guess). This video has everything: read-along text, flaming fonts, rotating swipes, guitar solo, sax solo, keyboard solo, and even soulful “ohhhhohohhhh” harmonization. You get the feeling watching this that the entire university was founded on a collision course with destiny that was achieved by the production of this video.
I did not anticipate after seeing this for the first time that I would wind up writing about it, but then it was stuck in my head ALL DAY while I was running errands. “HOT HOT HOT, HOT HOT HOT . . . Appalachian is HOT HOT HOT.” Think for a moment about how you’re going to block out those lyrics for the next few days. You can’t. It’s diabolical.
