Proper Hot Dog Forking Technique
Hot dogs are an American favorite. They can also be quite a frustration when trying to transfer them from a pot of boiling water or a grill to a hot dog bun. Most ill-equipped kitchens or impromptu cooking sessions will leave you attempting this maneuver with a fork instead of tongs. This article analyzes the two most common hot dog forking errors and shows you how to properly fork a hot dog, with homemade illustrations.
You’re Doing It Wrong #1: The Wiggle

The Wiggle occurs when the user inserts the fork into the hot dog wiener vertically. Unfortunately, the force required to lift the wiener out of water or off of a grill is the same amount of force required to prevent the wiener from assuming a position in the bun. When the wiener inevitably clings to the fork, the user resorts to wiggling the hot dog in the hopes that the unsecured portions of the link will gyrate the dog loose. While this may eventually work, it takes far too long and during such time you look like a total doofus.
You’re Doing It Wrong #2: The Crush
If wiggling doesn’t work, users may attempt to grab the wiener by wrapping their hands around the bun and squeezing. This results in a crushed bun, or, worse still, bun-half separation. A quality hot dog cannot afford to be destroyed. The crush is unacceptable.

Doing It Right: The Diagonal

The proper way to place a hot dog into a bun is to pierce the wiener diagonally, avoiding both the wiggle and the crush. When laid in the bun, the fork can be extracted by sliding the wiener horizontally in the bun. In this position, the bun will naturally provide friction to release the fork. The key is avoiding the impulse to place the fork in the wiener vertically - planning ahead is important. Also, because the fork is being inserted diagonally, the insertion must not be as deep as when attempted vertically, allowing the fork to come off the hot dog even easier.
Armed with this valuable knowledge you too can have a more perfect hot-dog-going experience. Enjoy!
